ASA Rejects Complaints Against Chris Moyles Advert

A TV ad for Chris Moyles’ new show on Radio X has been cleared of any wrongdoing from the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) even though it received over 100 complaints.

The advert was a parody of The Verve’s Bitter Sweet Symphony music video and shows Moyles walking down a street whilst barging into and knocking people over.

The ASA received a total of 106 complaints about the advert with the vast majority of them claiming it was "offensive and irresponsible" because it "encouraged and condoned anti-social and violent behaviour."

It was also noted that the advert was "inappropriately scheduled for broadcast at times when children may be watching." Many argued that the advert could encourage children to think that the behaviour Moyles was displaying is the appropriate way to act.

This is Global – the company who own Radio X responded to the complaints arguing that many people would recognise that the advert was a parody and that this would underline the surreal nature of the situation. They went on to add that Moyles’ actions in the clip were "slapstick rather than violent" and the advert appeared on ITV Player – and so didn’t directly target children.

The ASA wrote a statement rejecting the complaints: "We acknowledged that his actions in the ad were likely to be seen as unpleasant, but we considered that the context in which it was shown meant viewers were unlikely to interpret it as realistic and as an acceptable way to behave.

"In the particular circumstances of the ad, we concluded it was unlikely to cause serious or widespread offence or be seen to encourage or condone anti-social behaviour or bullying."
