Stars pay tribute to Cilla... and then there's Katie Hopkins

Tributes to Cilla Black have been pouring in over social media following the death of the entertainer at her home in Spain yesterday.

Cilla is thought to have died of natural causes at the age of 72 though a post-mortem will be carried out to determine the exact cause of her death.

Her showbiz friends, of which there are many, shared kind words about the loveable star through Twitter and other social media. Notably Paul O'Grady, Cliff Richard and Joan Collins have all shared their sadness over Cilla's passing.

One person did the opposite. Katie Hopkins who first came to public attention as a contestant on The Apprentice, and is now more widely known for being a generally nasty human being. After Cilla's death was announced she tweeted: "If there are any celebrities who haven't yet tweeted their sadness over Cilla, please report to Sincerity Services immediately #rushtogush

"I understand people love Cilla. But the race to proclaim this on Twitter is a curious thing."

Most decent human beings were disgusted at her comments so soon after Cilla's death but Hopkins' former Apprentice boss Lord Alan Sugar soon made his feelings about her outburst known by responding: “@KTHopkins RT: understand people love Cilla. But the race to proclaim this on Twitter is a curious thing......why don't you shut up idiot!

“Enough with the controversy BS you need to know where to draw the line . This was too far

What I personally find curious is that Hopkins finds the British public's compassion curious. Yes, it may seem odd to her that even people who did not know Cilla are rushing to express their condolences and yes, that is a very British thing to do but she doesn't seem to understand how well loved and respected Cilla was.

As an entertainer, she frequently put herself out there and created joy for the British public. I grew up watching her on Blind Date on a Saturday night and it was must-see viewing. The least that any of us can do to thank Cilla is to pay homage to her legacy.

Hopkins is well known for her controversial comments and in fact she seems to use the attention that brings to increase her “fame”. All she is doing by making these latest comments is trying to use the death of a celebrity to her advantage.
