Interview: Maya Lane talks new music, being authentic, inspirations, & upcoming shows

by Andrew Braithwaite

Today, Maya Lane unveils her latest folk-pop infused single, 'Heart for a Heart,' marking another milestone in her career. Positioned as the UK's answer to the illustrious pop/country crossover stars of the US, Lane has been steadily carving her path in the industry. With her music already gracing the airwaves of BBC Radio 1 and earning accolades from major press outlets, she has proven herself as a force to be reckoned with. With these achievements in mind, we seized the opportunity to delve deeper into Lane's artistry and aspirations in an interview.

I had the chance to sneak a listen to your upcoming folk-pop infused single, "Heart For A Heart." Could you share a bit about the inspiration behind the song?

‘Heart For A Heart’ is a song that’s been tucked away in my back pocket for a couple of years now and so I’m so excited to finally be sharing it! The idea came to me while watching a film, in which the main character sets out to seek revenge on those who’d wronged her. Although the storyline of the song is fictional, the message resonates so deeply with emotions that often arise after feeling betrayed, whether that be in a relationship or a friendship.

I can hear a blend of styles in your music. How do you best describe your genre?

I’m inspired by so many different types of music and genres, but I would describe my sound as pop with country and folk influences.

You’ve already had a great reception from the press, and I guess for any upcoming artist getting that first spin on Radio 1 is a big one. How did it feel to hear your song played on BBC Radio 1 for the first time?

Thank you! Yes, it was definitely a pinch me moment. When I was listening to the show I was terrified they had made a mistake and weren’t actually going to play me, so when they did it was very surreal and exciting!

There’s comparisons floating around comparing you with the likes of Haim and Kacey Musgraves, but who are your main influences?

I love both of those artists so much, so it’s the biggest compliment being compared to them. I grew up listening to lots of 70s folk and country music and am forever inspired by artists like Joni Mitchell and Fleetwood Mac.

With still being very young in the industry, have you learnt anything you would recommend to other artists in a similar age and position to you?

I think one of the most important things is to make sure you are listening to yourself and doing what feels right and authentic to you. There can often be a lot of different opinions from people around you who may be older or more experienced and while I think it’s super important to take advice and feedback, you need to trust your gut and find your own voice.

What has been your best gig or show you have performed at to date?

It’s so hard to pick just one as every show is so different. I have to say some of my favourite shows were from the support tour I went on at the end of last year (opening for Far From Saints). There was such a lovely atmosphere and audience at every show.

Do you have a dream collaboration?

Ahhh, there are so many artists I would love to collaborate with. However, Kacey Musgraves is definitely at the top of the list!

Can you tell us about your upcoming shows?

I’m currently on a Living Room Tour with my friend and fellow artist Edie Bens. We are going up and down the country playing acoustic shows to fans in their homes. It’s really special to be able to meet and play to people in such an intimate setting. We are always taking new applications if anyone wants to apply to host a show :)
I also have a gig coming up at The Half Moon in Putney on 23rd April as part of the Ferocious Talent curated night.

You seem to be gaining more traction as an upcoming artist, and you’ve already achieved more than most artists can imagine. What was the initial catalyst that took you to that next level to get the industry talking?

That's very kind of you! It can be hard as an upcoming, independent artist to not get caught up in comparing yourself. I’m a very ambitious person and have a never ending list of things I hope to achieve. Having said that, I try to look at what I’ve done from the eyes of my 12 year old self and see how proud she would be. Personally, I feel like being hard working, resilient and authentic is the best way to keep progressing.

Is there anyone new hot on your music radar that you’re listening to at the moment?

She’s obviously not a new artist but I’ve been loving Maggie Rogers new album!

Have you got a message to your followers and fans?

Just the biggest thank you for all your support, I’m so excited to keep sharing new music, playing shows and to have you along on this journey!

Thanks Maya- all the best for the future!
