Review: B*Witched - Birthday

If you’re a child of the 90s, you’ll know well about the energy that this girl group gave to millions. Arguably, their most successful track, "C’est La Vie," was a staple of the late 90s and put them firmly on the music industry’s map. "Birthday" is a celebration of their 25th Year, but there are other subtle messages that come through within the lyrics that need a little more attention.

Having a birthday should be a time of celebration and happiness, but in Bwitched’s latest song, there seems to be a bit of resentment thrown in. On this birthday, it seems that someone in a relationship has moved on and found someone else, and we’re looking at a ‘see what you’re missing’ situation. When you couple this with the video, some of the old fun of Bwitched's 90s videos play a part in making this song go with a bang! Obviously, the band is that bit older, but clearly still enjoying each other’s company in performing and choreographing some fun moves.

With a slower beat than we heard in their heyday, "Birthday" sits a little further back in tempo with a slow melody line. There is a synthetic vibe to the drums, and towards the end, you can hear the vocal production clearly utilizing modern enhancements that weren’t around 25 years ago. There is a nice vibe throughout here, with shared vocals, nice harmonies, and a pace that would suggest a maturity in writing and performance that will no doubt reengage fans from the band's original releases, but I imagine new listeners may well be interested in this track too.
