Review: Maisie Peters - Body Better

Maisie Peters is a young woman with a plan. She started releasing her own material at the tender age of 17, having already been seen on our TV screens at 15 performing some of her own songs. She has been given some good live performing opportunities too, opening for Niall Horan on a recent tour, as well as Ed Sheeran, so we can assume that the future is looking very very bright for Maisie Peters.

With the title of Body Better, I felt initially that this may well be a body positive song, but it doesn’t take long to realise I was very wrong. Maisie Peters is singing to us about the moment when a relationship ends and the partner leaves for someone else. In the song she explores all the reasons or things that she may have done wrong to make her partner leave, as in her eyes it was going fine. The ultimate conclusion is that the other woman must have had a better body than her! So not the body positive release I thought it might be

From the first 10 seconds or so, I felt that Body Better was going to take me on a 80s nostalgia ride, but that feel changes quickly when the first vocal kicks in and it is just voice and kick drum. It becomes a very 21st century song at this point! The melody line is conversational, and you sense that the recipient of the commentary knows exactly what is being said, but is unlikely to give any answers. The song is catchy, with some quick to learn singalong phrases as the layering builds throughout the song. I was caught out a bit by the end, it’s a pretty abrupt stop, but apart from that, Maisie Peter’s latest song is a definite one for lots of playlists this year.
