Review: Billy Lockett - Miss Missing You

Billy Locket has a longer career in music than you might think. He began releasing material as far back as 2011, but the UK based singer songwriter is maturing into a name that many people will be becoming familiar with. A quick search of recent live shows tell us that not only can Billy Lockett write a good tune, he is a pretty talented live performer and pianist too!

Throughout the song, I was trying to clarify if this was a song of loss, or is Billy Lockett preempting how he would feel if that moment did happen! There are some beautiful lines that make the hook of certain phrases really stick with you, for example, ‘you’re raining on my mind, and the more common call ‘I should have listened to Beyoncé’ when referring to the prospect that he should have ‘put a ring on it’.

From the moment I heard the bass intro to Miss Missing You, I knew I was going to like this track. What this musically delivers is a blend of traditional soul with a pop twist. The instrumentation is straightforward with guitars, some strings and piano, layered in places with beautiful vocals and for me it’s the arrangement that keeps the track pure and great to listen to. But what sets it off, as with most music, is the vocal, and Billy Lockett has an earthy voice that can transcend both soul and pop to create this epic fusion. Sometimes I accidentally come across some real gems in the new releases I hear, and for me, this is certainly one.
