Review: Blake Rose - Use Me

Blake Rose is a 25 year old singer songwriter from Perth, Australia. He first came to our attention as a 21 year old singer songwriter, receiving rave reviews for his debut work. His latest release, Use Me, is another example of a rare songwriting talent who will no doubt be producing other creative pieces for years to come.

I think the song title gives you a fairly good idea where we’re going with this track. The focus is on what could be inferred as an obsession! The lyrics hint that there may be an interest from both parties, but the main message Blake Rose is getting across is he’s quite happy to be an object of lust with the person of his desires! During the verses, the lyrics are in short bursts, with little continuity between phrases; this is in contrast to the chorus, where there are longer, more linked phrases that accentuate the hook.

Musically the song has a nice clean guitar with an electric piano and occasional synth over the top as the main instrumentation. The chord progression is good and matches the flow of the song, with Rose’s voice clear, despite the deliberate muffle in places and lots of reverb. What I really like about this track is the overall balance that is created by the breaks, build ups and instrumentation changes through the different sections. This is a really lovely way to be introduced to a new artist and I think I will definitely be looking out for new tracks from Blake Rose.
