Review: Comments - Iggy Pop

Who would have thought Iggy Pop is 75? The aging rocker is still releasing new music and sounding great in the process, with his trademark look and stage presence.

Comments starts with a solo bass with a lot of high end, not a million miles away from the Blink 182 sound of the late 90s. When the rest of the instruments come in, we feel a real energy to the track. The use of the kick drum is very effective and made me really want to hear this track live, as I can imagine the boom feeling you would get from the rhythm section in an arena. Guitar wise, we get a well blended balance that produces a full backing to Iggy’s vocal. There are synths and at times you could be mistaken for thinking that this track came from a completely different era, which is really effective.

But the one thing that needs a real mention is the vocal itself. Sometimes when rockers get older, their voice sounds very out of place on a record. This is not the case at all for Iggy Pop! He has created a melody line that fits his range, and gives his vocal a clarity that is warm, yet edgy. There are times where the age of the vocal chords can be heard a little, but this does not detract from what is a great track from the veteran rocker and I think this release is really going to excite Iggy Pop fans, both old and new.
