Review: you don’t Fullmoon Groove, Cisco Swank

Fueled by laid back grooves, catchy melodies, and swelling jazz harmony, Fullmoon Groove with Cisco Swank team up for the new single, “you don’t”.

The song takes no time to set any kind of introduction – the groove starts immediately, alongside the vocals for the first verse. Chords played by an electric guitar swell in and out to provide further context for the harmony. The way the drums, right from the get go, just slightly lag behind is absolutely addicting. The song then continues to the chorus, piling on more instruments alongside the wonderfully magical repeating melody. The tune continues with this verse-chorus cycle, though keeping it dynamic with the odd-instrument thrown in here and there, notedly a Rhodes part, until Cisco’s spotlight comes in the second half of the song. “you don’t” modulates to a different key, just to make the switch all the more obvious, and Cisco’s gorgeous voice takes you to flight. The way the chords suddenly shift, with the backing track adding the slightest bit of musical tension from time to time, creates a true work of art. The melodies sung by Cisco then switch to a more rhythmic rap section, carrying his section over to an electric guitar solo that bears almost a metal twist to its playing. The bass seems to sing its counter-melody, continuing in the meantime to groove with the drums, the instruments following behind. The chaotic guitar solo fades the song to a close, making all the more sense of the tension that kept being piled on to the instrumentation as the song progressed.

“You don’t” is a wonderful example of a clash of talents, especially thanks to Cisco’s wonderful addition to the formula. The way it keeps the listener on its toes without being explicitly avant-garde in its approach is a feat by itself, and made a wonderful track in the process. The jam-feel from start to finish begs for this song to be enjoyed live with an extended solo section, though the recording certainly provides for that particular craving.
