Review: Invisible Shadow Academy

Dan Avidan, teamed up with longtime Ninja Sex Party’s producer, Jim Roach, decided to create a project, called Shadow Academy, proving that the duo shine outside of the realm of comedy in their newest, rocking single, ‘Invisible’.

The song takes no time to introduce itself, opting instead for the ‘canon-ball into the water’ approach of getting the instruments laid out the moment the song starts. Listeners get a sense of the groove and rhythm that stays consistent from start to finish. Traditional rock instruments, such as glaring overdriven guitars and blasting snares and crashes, all toppled with a healthy sprinkle of synth leads, take helm until the instrumentation is stripped to a drum-and-bass section, where Dan Avidan’s soaring vocals make their entrance. Going into the chorus, the classic multi-layered approach to Dan’s signature sound really shines the most where expanded harmonies, belted in high notes scratching the peak of Dan’s vocal range, make the part sound all the more huge. The sense of grandiosity is key for ‘Invisible’, everything either soaring or pounding to give even more impact to those trailing chords and slow-moving melodies. The repeating nature of the choruses’ hook is incredibly infectious, and clever in its catchiness. The words ‘I am Invisible’ will surely ring long after the song has finished, if the quality of it doesn’t warrant an immediate replay for the listener.

This isn’t the first time Dan’s proven himself as a wonderful song writer outside of comedy, and regardless Ninja Sex Party, the group that gave him the platform he has today, is outstanding, regardless of its comedy. Rather, Shadow Academy is not only another showcase of his talents, alongside Jim Roach’s, but his most refined outing into that realm of music. The rock feel of the song captures Avidan’s roots perfectly, with that new-age tinge that previously inspired Rush in the 80s perfectly encapsulating the powerhouse that has become Shadow Academy.
