Review: The Fool Cory Henry

Switching the normally chill, soulful old-school R&B vibe to instead take the other side of that same coin, Cory Henry takes it to the dance floor with ‘The Fool’, a fast-paced dance anthem.

In some instances, you can get a feel for the entirety of the track with only a single measure. In the case of Cory Henry’s newest single, the slapping bass groove that opens, accompanied by a single guitar strum that foreshadows the funky nature of the track is all a listener needs to get a feel for what’s to come. Cory Henry enters the scene with his silky voice and a sudden entrance by a four-on-the-floor rhythm. Various synths are sprinkled here and there to give answer to the melodic questions Henry poses in the verses, which come together when they come in later in the chorus alongside Henry’s key instrument, the Hammond organ. The catchy melody that navigates the groove will be stuck in your head for days to come, the energy always rising especially as the second chorus comes into play. Following the extended section, a keytar solo, much similar to an electric guitar jams over the two sections that the listeners have grown familiar with at this point. The lines are never ending, always topping one another and continuing to raise the dynamics further. The song seems to get tastier, nay, NASTIER by the bar in such a perfect fashion. Instruments keep piling in, getting louder and louder into the solo section and more expressive until the song eventually begins to fade in the middle of the solos, and the song comes to a close.

‘The Fool’ is an extremely fun song, especially by the latter half where you feel like the musicians playing the track are simply having fun and nothing more, sounding amazing by pure happenstance and talent. Even in the previous section, there’s a sense of looseness that makes the song incredibly jovial in a true, classic disco fashion from the 70s. Cory Henry has perfectly captured a vibe within this track, and made one of the more pleasant dance tracks of the year.
