Review: Bite Me Avril Lavigne

It’s 2006 again, a new Avril Lavigne song is blaring on your cheap radio, titled ‘Bite Me’, and all seems right with the world again.

Immediately after hearing the first few notes the pop punk legend sings, listeners will be blown away by how timeless Avril Lavigne is in almost every way. The first notes you’ll hear are extremely impressive, reaching at the highest point of one’s chest voice. The song opens with a subdued version of the chorus, foreshadowing what’s to come. The classic clean-guitar riff with deep drums blasting through the verse is signature to this style, as Avril navigates melodiously through the part. The song quickly builds to the chorus, that melody we heard before, but with the entire band playing a down-beat groove with loud distorted guitars, and heavy vocal harmonies that are so important to get the energy to that level. In the latter half of the chorus, the song goes double-time, grooving harder than ever before. The second verse has plenty of vocal harmonies to raise the excitement from the first verse, as does the bridge after the second chorus. The structure is pretty standard to pop-punk songs, but the energy is absolutely out of this world. It’s better than any caffeinated drink – this song will get you moving in your seat, awake as can be. The production is also so clean, giving space to each instrument while also blasting in your face as loud as they possibly can.

‘Bite Me’ is one of the greatest Avril Lavigne songs, and proves that she can easily keep the genre alive and exciting, while also flexing all the muscles she’s built in the almost two-decade career she’s had in music. The only difference is that the production of this song far exceeds even her hits, but the talent is still there, and so is the excitement that follows Avril Lavigne wherever she journeys.
