Review: The Actor alt-J

Alt-J returns with a new single titled ‘The Actor’ to show the world that having ambiguous inspirations and an ambitious take on composition, production, and execution can result in some of the most interestingly unique music, even in 2022.

The song begins with a synth pad barely loud enough for the listener to notice, until the guitar riff and electrifying-yet-soft drums enter play. The lack of hi hats on the drum give a very unique feel to the verse, and already listeners should be able to gather the 80s sounds and production being used to set the mood in ‘The Actor’. The thick guitars and synths are so classic of that era of music, and hearing them warts and all is endearing in some ways. The riverbed voices leading the melody do a wonderful job traversing the soundscape. The lead into the chorus, introducing more layers of synth pads and arpeggiated keys and a hypnotizing string pad really thickens up the sound, and gives ‘The Actor’ this peaceful hovering feel. It has elements of Pink Floyd, the Beatles, and even Tears for Fears. There are distinct rock elements, coupled with 80s dance music and new-age music from the era. The blend of all the ideas is the song’s strongest trait – it’s a song that couldn’t be played or performed by anyone else but alt-J, and give it the same passion and love ‘The Actor’ showcases.

‘The Actor’ is yet another gorgeous song by alt-J. Its four-minute length, slightly longer than your average tune, goes by extremely quickly. The slow, psychedelic movement of the progression entrances the listener from that to finish, and makes for one of the more interesting and nostalgic releases of the year, all the while staying afloat, not anchored by its inspiration or limitations to stay authentic to the sound it pays homage to.
