Review: Purity Lilyisthatyou

Earlier in 2021, Lilyisthatyou took the world by storm with her first single, a viral Tik Tok hit, titled ‘FMRN’. Two singles later, Lilyisthatyou continues her message of sex positivity in one of the most fun songs of 2022 so far – ‘Purity’.

Production-wise, ‘Purity’ is a clear-sounding, tight dance-pop anthem. The snappy drums, the floaty synths, and the hints of guitars and acoustic bass add a layer of authenticity that really helps bring up the tune. Outside of the production, however, this feels very punk in almost every way. The fast-pace, the melody-less pre-chorus, the upbeat thrash – it’s got it all. Lyrically, Lilyisthatyou revolts against the idea of sexual purity, which that itself is insanely punk.

The chorus that leads from the ‘be aggressive’ chant is extremely catchy, especially accentuated with a bell synth, making sure you’ll have the song stuck in your head for days to come. The composition is extremely fast paced, going from a very short intro, to the first chorus then Immediately into the pre-chorus. The cycle repeats, ending on the pre-chorus bringing the song to a close, but not before Lily can be heard laughing the song to an exit. All in all, the song is extremely short, running just shy of two minutes, almost half the length of a traditional radio tune. The song’s length adds on to the heavily replayable, addictive nature of both the punk-feel and the fast pace of the composition.

Lilyisthatyou has successfully topped herself with every new song, and brings a very important subject to the limelight with all the bluntness that such a subject requires to properly convey the message. All that done with such a punk attitude, I would argue that ‘Purity’ is the artist’s most important track so far. With how clean the song sounds, and the replayable nature of it, it’s sure to be a landmark in the singer’s discography.
