Review: Sex on the beach Tyler Shaw

The sun’s as hot as can be in early July, and Tyler Shaw does nothing to help with the heat. In fact, he decided to release a burning hot single, Sex on the Beach, which will groove you into the rest of summer.

Recently, there’s been a surge in disco, reshaped with both retro elements and modern songwriting. One of the most important figures in that rise was Dua Lipa, in my opinion, and this is new son by Tyler Shaw is a proof of the importance of Dua Lipa’s music. The kind of energy she reminded the world existing is revitalized, and done so incredibly well on Sex on the Beach.

The classic four-on-the-floor rhythm opens the song, leaving no room for interpretation from the listener. You know exactly what this song is going to be, especially with that classic 2-5-1-4 progression similar to Doja Cat’s Say So, which used the same progression for her own take on post-disco. Tyler’s voice smoothly guides the listener through the verse and into the energetic chorus. The lack of distinct vocal harmony is definitely noted, but what Tyler lacks in harmony he makes up for in groove and energy. Boy, does this song KICK. The energy never ceases, even in the bridge where the energy drops for a moment. As a listener, you’re simply anticipating the next high, the climax of the song. The melodies presented throughout the song are extremely catchy, even the verses which would typically have a more conversational cadence.

These types of songs never cease to entertain me, however many times I’ve heard these four-on-the-floor 90bpm tunes (and hell, as a musician, I’ve USED these rhythms countless times). Sex on the Beach seems to stand out a bit above the pack, however. There’s something about Tyler’s melodies, and his voice, that just make this all the more special. It’s a song perfectly geared for summer, especially the beach. Just be sure not to listen to the song too carefully, there are laws for the beach, after all.
