Review: Contact High We Are Scientists

Take two parts punk, one part rock and a dash of pop, mix well in a test tube and out comes a high octane cracker of a song called “Contact High”!

The high energy intro is a great way to show us what they have in store.

The verse features drums, bass and vocals for the first half, and then slowly introduces some heavily distorted palm muted guitar notes.

Onto the chorus and we hear the full sound of the band, with guitars exploding into force and strumming ferociously. The chorus ends with a cool guitar riff that is reminiscent of early foo fighters (think back to Everlong for those of you who were even around in 1997!)

The song progresses into verse two, which is essentially the same as verse one, with some subtle differences thrown in, then hammers out another cracking chorus, which is the highlight of the song, especially the high notes on the words “Contact High”

The bridge is a smart diversion. I like the shift in the drum beat at the end of the bridge. This gives the song a chance to catch its breath before launching again into another very high energy chorus.

Musically, We Are Scientists do a great job building dynamics and holding the listeners attention, and in true rock fashion, the song finishes with an epic riffy guitar and drum roll fill. Rock is about breaking the rules, we all know that, however, all good rock songs must have a cool ending, if you need proof of that, listen to any ACDC song, you’ll know what I mean !

Keith(guitar/vocals) and Chris(Bass) are well known for their comedic style. Lyrically, this song is a bit of a piss take on the whole “social distancing” thing, and how great it feels to finally reconnect with the people closest to you.

One of the things that impresses fans of this NYC band is their youthfulness. The band has been around for more than twenty years, these dudes are in their forties, but you just wouldn’t guess that from they way they sound, their sense of humour and jovial spirit.

We Are Scientists are a reminder to the whole rock world to lighten up, not take ourselves so seriously and have some fun. The whole world could use more of Contact High and We Are Scientists!
