Review: ONE MORE FIGHT AJ Mitchell

A little bit of pop, a little bit of jazz, a little bit of dance, AJ Mitchell takes on all that in the titular song from his newest EP, ONE MORE FIGHT.

The thing that immediately will grasp the listener’s attention is AJ’s extremely soothing, talented voice. His control is out of this world, with complex, fast runs over already complex melodies. While there is complexity, it never feels out of place or hard to understand – it’s both commercially digestible and complex to please the nerdiest of listeners. Speaking of which, AJ already had me hooked with my weakness – minor 4th chords (for those who don’t know what that means, simply listen to ONE MORE FIGHT and pay attention to the ONE chord that really stands out. I promise you that’s the one I’m talking about). It can definitely sometimes feel gimmicky – especially when overused. More than ever before I’ve been hearing it, and though it’s used in this song quite a few times, it’s used very cleverly. The chord itself isn’t used until the pre-chorus, and then introduces it into the chorus as the last chord. It brings tension, which is definitely its purpose, but it does so in a very off-guard way. The vibe of the song is especially happy and funky, so such a drastic change in tone is especially highlighted in a song such as this one. AJ’s harmonies also highlight the chord beautifully, but he does so for the entirety of the song, especially in the chorus. His choice of counter-melody and harmony is beyond what I’d expect for a song like this, which made it all the more appreciated.

ONE MORE FIGHT is something special. It’s fun, it’s poppy, and showcases the talent of AJ Mitchell both as a performer and composer. Its short duration makes it perfect to either play on loop, or just simply welcomes multiple listens. It’s addictive nature, however, will guarantee more than one listen.
