Review: Billionaire Delta Goodrem

In what might be one of the most driving and epic song of the year so far, Delta Goodrem delivers a fantastic western-infused showtune folk song that’s filled with excitement and eccentricity with her new single, Billionaire.

I can’t say I’ve ever heard a song quite like Billionaire, to be honest. I think the most accurate label you could give the song would be some sort of blend of Broadway and showtune, but even that doesn’t quite hit the mark on describing the madness that goes on to this song. It’s definitely very cinematic; the imagery Billionaire will give you will be out of this world, it’s almost as if this was part of a larger play, or some sort of concept. The orchestral elements especially drive this home, but even without those the composition screams, quite literally, its story. The usage of the classic dramatic/evil sounding harmonic minor scale here is absolutely key to the tone Goodrem was aiming for, but what’s even more crucial is her voice herself. Man, can she project! I’m sure her voice wouldn’t need a microphone, had she been performing this song in front of a live audience. Especially towards the end of the song, she belts some of the most emotionally powerful tones I’ve ever heard. Backed by gorgeous harmonies, everything about this composition screams epic in the least ironic way possible. There is a feeling of authenticity within the song, whether that is through its ideas, the acoustic nature of all the instruments, or the combination of the two, I’m not sure. Either way, it makes for one of the greatest listening experiences of the year already.

To say that this tune is interesting is an understatement. Everything about this song is fascinating, down to every single little aspect. Every listen will reveal something new you might’ve not caught on your first go-around, but there are gems hidden there for every fresh new spin of the track. Billionaire is a song to be remembered, and it’s criminal not to have this as part of some larger concept, if that’s not the case. It’s a wonderful song that just begs for more.
