Review: Silk Sonic Intro Silk Sonic

The dynamic duo is out and about again, just a week after their debut single, with another offering. This time, weirdly enough, they decided to release what is most likely the intro to their upcoming album, and despite only being a minute in length, there’s still plenty to unpack in this tune.

First of all, there’s a wonderful groove that’s introduced just in the first second of the record, and this time the sound is much more akin to what I was expecting when mashing the creatively genius minds of Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak. It’s a lot funkier, with snappy bass lines, a quick-witted, tasty drum groove, and some classic Motown touches, such as horn punches and strings. Again, more than ever, this sounds like it could’ve been part of a Jacksons record, I can almost hear Michael on this song. Just as the song begins to take form, the groove takes a halt for Bruno Mars to introduce funk veteran Bootsy Collins. The song quickly wraps up after the legend introduces the band, leaving the listeners wanting more.

Upon listening to their single Leave the Door Open, one might not know the concept behind the record, but this song makes it all the more obvious for those who haven’t been following the bands in their recent interviews. The idea behind the record is that this is all one setlist, presented by Bootsy Collins, that’s going to be filled with interludes and introductions. It’s going to be an almost theatrical record, a window of a time when we could all gather at a bar and watch master musicians shred away for an hour, giving it their all to the songs they wrote. This song corroborates what the duo have been saying in those interviews, and I couldn’t be more excited for it.

Despite being the briefest peak into the record, Silk Sonic Intro still made me as excited about this band as their debut single did. It only shows how far they’ve gone for the authenticity of their tone and their image, and despite only being a minute long, it still manages to display excellent musicianship and songwriting from the two. If Leave the Door Open hadn’t done the job for you, this song should make Silk Sonic’s upcoming album one of your most anticipated releases of the year.
