Madonna’s Still Got it: UK's Biggest Selling Female Artist

in Latest

The Official Charts Company has revealed the UK’s biggest selling female artist of all time.

The list, compiled to celebrate 60 years of the Official Singles Chart, has revealed that Madonna has officially racked up the most UK singles sales having sold a total of 17.8 million records.

Her career started way back in 1984 with her first single Holiday but she didn't get her first number one until Into the Groove was released a year later. As well as being her first number one, it has also been her biggest selling single to date.

Beat into the number two position was Rihanna with a total of 11.4 million records sold. Madonna should really be sweating in her leotard though. If Rihanna continues to sell singles at the rate she is, she could actually beat the veteran, who is 30 years her senior into second place.

Quite astonishingly, Rihanna is also the youngest artist in the list which also includes the likes of Lady Gaga and Kylie Minogue, who is celebrating her 25th year in music this year.

Seems like a head start counts for nothing these days.

The full list is as follows:

  1. Madonna (17.8m)
  2. Rihanna (11.4m)
  3. Kylie Minogue (10.2m)
  4. Whitney Houston (8.5m)
  5. Lady Gaga (7.329m)
  6. Britney Spears (7.32m)
  7. Beyonce (6.9m)
  8. Celine Dion (6.7m)
  9. Mariah Carey 6.62m)
  10. Olivia Newton John (6.61m)
