Tesco to stock vinyl Records After Increased Sales of Record Decks

Tesco is set to take advantage of the resurgence of vinyl by starting to stock vinyl records at its stores.

The company announced that records will be available from its shelves from Friday, September 4 and the first title that it will be stocking is the new offering from Iron Maiden, The Book of Souls.

When explaining the decision, Tesco's music buyer Michael Mulligan said: "In the last year we began selling record decks in our largest stores and initial sales are very encouraging, so giving our customers some new vinyl to play on those decks seems like the logical next step."

Far from being a dying medium, sales of vinyl in the wider market have been steadily increasing once again and recently reached their highest since 1995. Vinyl accounted for 2% of the UK music market last year which may not sound like a lot but when it's previously been considered a dying medium, that is pretty impressive. In fact, digital sales saw a decline last year where vinyl saw an increase. Granted that it won't be competing with downloading any time soon but it's still pretty good going.

So will people be buying vinyl records alongside their Corn Flakes? There seems to be a nostalgic mood around vinyl and its consumption and people love their nostalgia. That alone wouldn't be enough to make it worth a company like Tesco's while to stock however, as Mulligan said, stores have been priming customers for some time by making record players available. Doing this has tapped into people's sense of novelty over owning one and now consumers are primed to start building their modern record collection.

At this point, Tesco don't have much to lose.
