Top of the Pops to Make a Comeback to BBC

Top of the Pops is rumoured to be making a comeback with Fearne Cotton and Dermot O’Leary at the helm.

The BBC stopped broadcasting weekly editions of the show back in 2006 but has continued to make seasonal specials every year which have been presented by Cotton and Reggie Yates.

So far the BBC have made efforts to play down claims of the show’s return with a spokesperson saying "there have been constant whispers about Top of the Pops returning - but they are just whispers". This is true but if the rumours are to be believed, the return of the show on Friday evenings will coincide with the charts moving from Sundays to a Friday.

Back in its heyday, Top of the Pops was essential viewing. Every chart-savvy person would tune in religiously every Friday night to see their favourite artists perform their latest chart-topping hits. You have to remember that this was a time before YouTube when people who didn’t have access to music channels couldn’t watch music videos, or even artists performing their songs easily. I was one such child. I grew up in the 90s and loved music, listening to the charts religiously every Sunday but the only way I could see my favourite trashy pop bands was by tuning in to TOTP. That was the draw for the show when it was in its prime; it provided a window into music that few could experience otherwise.

So is there a place for TOTP now in these times where we can easily gain access to whatever we want at the click of a mouse. Right now I would say no because part of the whole point of watching the program was to see the chart if you had missed it on a Sunday but this meant that you had to wait almost a whole week.

With the charts moving to Friday, I now think that just maybe, TOTP will be able to reclaim some of the magic of its glory days. Depending on how the details are worked out, viewers should be able to see the chart almost in real time and this is a powerful selling point for the format.

Will it be a success if it is brought back? It’s hard to tell but really depends on producers making the most of the change to the charts and also making sure that it speaks to its target audience. Rumours of Dermot O’Leary joining the show concern me because I just don’t think he can pull off the trendy youth look. Fearne Cotton in a better position than him and has done well for the many years that she has been a figure head of the show but I believe she deserves some fresh blood to breathe new life into the format.
