Spice Girls Reunion Would Cheapen Their Message

Yet another Spice Girls reunion has been hinted at; this time in order to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of breakthrough single Wannabe.

Emma Bunton hinted in an interview that the only thing that was holding back another possible reunion was scheduling. She said: "I was with Geri and Mel B just recently, we love each other and we love performing together.

"It's just when the timing is right because we all have our own careers now and we have families, it's just about getting five schedules together and that's all it is."

Any self respecting child of the 90s loved the Spice Girls when they were at their peak pre Geri Halliwell abandonment and the first couple of times they held a reunion after they officially broke up were every fan’s wet dream but now it seems that they are clinging mercilessly to the glory days which have sadly long passed.

The last Spice Girls reunion was at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics and they could quite easily have drawn a line under it there and ended on a high. Sadly there now frequently seems to be whisperings and rumours about the girls getting back together which is slowly cheapening their legacy.

What the Spice Girls did in the 90s for pop music and for women is unparalleled and no one has come close to their success since but every time there is talk of yet another final reunion, it makes them look more and more desperate; like they are just trying to use the Spice Girls name to cash in a quick cheque. That’s incredibly sad because the message of girl power that they perpetuated at their peak taught the world that women can powerful and self- sufficient but the more they try to use the name for gain, the less impact that message resonates.

Their impending 20th anniversary should be celebrated. Few female artists have been as successful and influential as they have but trying to con long suffering fans out of more money will leave a sour taste in the mouths of many.
