Girls Aloud singer and X-Factor judge Cheryl Cole wowed the crowds with her stunning full length red dress as she picked up the Best Music trophy at the Elle awards.

The singer said: “it is amazing to be recognised for my music, as this is what I love most, It's a real honour and I think I'm going to treat myself to a glass of wine- or three – now!”

While Cheryl proved popular with the crowds and the photographers on the red carpet in her 3,000 pound Alexander McQueen gown, it was young actress Emma Watson of Harry Potter fame who won the coveted Style Icon award.

She was presented the award by designer Dame Vivienne Westwood, however the eccentric designer decided not to follow the presentation speech written for her and instead admitted that she had no idea who Watson was.

Westwood said: “Yesterday I was asked, “This lady would like you to present the Style Icon Award to her if she wins. But I didn't know who she was. They said Emma Watson. I said “Who is Emma Watson?”

The actress was able to take it all in her stride though and received the awards saying: “It feels amazing. Fashion is something that I live, I try not to think about it too much. I try and block all that off and I just do what I love and just have fun with it.”

The actress, who wore a Hakaan mini dress for the occasion added: “I've definitely been feeling the pressure a bit more recently but it's just fun for me.”

Other stars receiving awards on the night included Coco Rocha who won the award for Best Model, Tom Ford who was crowned Best International Designer and Natalie Portman was was announced as Best Actress.
